The hippocampus and memory

Lynn Nadel

Psychology Department, University of Arizona , Tucson , Arizona , USA

More than 50 years after Hebb's speculation about cell assemblies and phase sequences, and Milner's work with HM targeting the hippocampus as a major component of memory systems, debates still rage about the functions of this brain region. And, about the nature of memory itself. My talk will cover some relevant historical background, and present data from a number of studies pointing towards a resolution of these debates. Particular emphasis will be placed on functional specialization within the medial temporal lobe.
