Modelling the inputs to place cells.

The nature of the sensory inputs to place cells is considered, making use of experimental data gained by recording from the same cells while changes are made to the geometrical layout of the environment. The possibility of increasing the scope of a simple feedforward model of place cell firing by including effects of synaptic plasticity is discussed. The likely additional contribution of interoceptive inputs such as 'path integration', and how this integrates with sensory inputs, is then considered. Finally, the consequences of these models for grid cells and for behaviour are discussed.
