Construction of a 3D map of spatial context by grid cells and place cells

Kate Jeffery

Cognitive, Perceptual and Brain Sciences, UCL, UK

Grid cells and place cells co-operate in forming a map-like representation of the environment that incorporates both spatial and non-spatial sensory information. This talk will describe our investigations of how different kinds of information are integrated. It seems that vertical space is treated differently from horizontal space, and that non-spatial ('contextual') information is combined upstream of the grid cells, perhaps by lateral entorhinal cortex. The functional consequences of these findings will be explored.
