Seeking information about sounds

Hynek Hermansky

Instantaneous spectrum of an acoustic signal has been postulated a carrier of information in the signal since early days of acoustic research. Motivated by results of psychophysical experiments over the past century, as well as by increasing knowledge of physiology of higher levels of mammalian hearing, we are pursuing alternative representations of acoustic signal that are based on dynamics of spectro-temporal patterns of the signal. Such alternative representations are finding applications in the current state-of-the-art machine recognition of speech.
