I'm in Namibia now and have seen the most beautiful part of the earth I've ever seen -- the great Namibian Sea of Dunes. It's a 50 km swath of red sand dunes some of them reaching over 300 meters in height. Namibia was a German colony and the difference between Namibia and South Africa is immediately apparent as Namibia's infrastructure, education, shanty towns, and vehicular traffic are all nicer (so far) than South Africa's. The shanty towns are electrified, constructed of regular construction materials and devoid of the detritus that plagues the South African townships. The roads while mostly dirt and wide and well constructed with culverts at river crossings and signs of regular maintenance. I'm travelling with a group of 11, 5 Americans, 3 Kiwis, and 3 Australians in a big yellow truck. We're camping for 50 days as we traverse the lower heartland of Africa. A more detailed description of the dune experience will be forthcoming but for now I must go play in the sand. Some suggestions for you -- take a walk this weekend and feel how it changes your mood. Find someplace where you can't hear cars or see other people. Breath the air. Make some time for yourself and think -- it's fun.
