Wind spectra and escape response of the cockroach. Do cockroaches `know' about fluid dynamics?

Dima Rinberg

Experiments with random noise stimulus on escape response system of American cockroach revealed rather unexpected results. Firing rates of giant interneurons, that convey essential information about wind stimulus, strongly depends on the spectral shape of the random noise stimulus, and do not depend on overall power of the stimulus. A neuroethological relevance and a simple model of this phenomenon are proposed. Some results on information calculation will be presented.
