The gamma cycle

There is substantial evidence indicating that gamma-band synchronization supports efficient communication between neuronal groups. I will review evidence supporting a mechanistic role of synchronization for communication and also evidence suggesting that cognitive control uses this mechanism. But does synchronization also play a role in coding e.g. visual stimulus information? I will present new evidence that gamma-band synchronization in monkey V1 is involved in coding relatedness, and I will present preliminary evidence that the phase of neuronal spiking in the gamma-cycle codes basic stimulus information.
